Grant Application Tutorial

A Cover Letter for the Grant Application Summary

A cover letter requesting consideration of funding must accompany your Grant Application Summary and must be signed by your organization’s chief executive officer or Chairperson of the Board.

The cover letter must be limited to 250 words or less and therefore must be as concise as possible.

Elements of an effective cover letter include any combination or all of the following:

  • Provides a one to two sentence overview of the organization, program or project.
  • Provides a one to two sentence description of the problem or need including a definition of the target population.
  • States how many individuals or families are served or gives an estimate of how many will be served per year.
  • Offers outcome statistics on previous program success rates and/or provides one or two expected outcome objectives that indicate how the program will positively impact the target population.
  • Describes in one to two sentences how the program is collaborative, innovative, or impacts systemic change.
  • Briefly describes a plan for ongoing sustainability of the program or project.
